So, I just finished Fable 2. Well, I finished the main story quests anyways. And I have to say that I am quite impressed, though, not exactly overall impressed just impressed in general.
For those of you that don’t know what Fable 2 is, it is basically set 500 years after the original game, Fable. Fable 2 gives you even more choices, options, and features.
They definitely improved on the moral compass of Fable where every choice defines who you become, which allows you to play the character how you want to play him or her and truly live the life you choose to live.
Fable 2 has more depth than the original by giving you a much bigger world to play in, less constraints, a growing and falling economy, more complex and almost limitless choices and consequences.
You can play the game as either a man or woman, get married, have children, own a dog, buy a house or more, decorate said house or houses, and eventually full your destiny which whatever you see fit to be that destiny.
Fable 2 - The Cons
I will try my best to keep this as spoiler free as possible.
Con #1: I would say that there are definitely some things in the game that were supposed to be there that aren’t, and the ending of the game seemed to happen to quickly and too easily.
This doesn’t really seem like a spoiler, so I’ll mention it.
Con #2: Peter Molyneux did say something about you being able to pick up bottles, swing from chandeliers, and use your surroundings to your advantage. Now, in playing the game I did see that you used your surroundings a little bit but not as much as I would have liked.
Also, for the life of me, I could throw a bottle or swing from a chandelier. Now, unless I am doing something wrong, that was disappointing. Though, don’t get me wrong because this isn’t a negative review at all. I just wanted to get the bad out of the way before I talk about the good.
Con #3: The last thing I didn’t like about the game was that the ending really wasn’t as epic as I would have liked. The story was great, build up was great, and then all of a sudden it was over and there really wasn’t an epic battle. Again, unless I was doing something wrong, it was disappointing.
Fable 2 - The Pros
The cool thing about Fable 2, though, is that you can continue playing afterwords just like the original Fable.
This time there are quests that you can’t even get until you finish the main story quests. This is definitely a good thing because once you finished the original fable you really didn’t know what to do with yourself, until “Fable: The Lost Chapters” came along.
Something else I enjoyed with Fable 2 was that the magic system was changed as to where you don’t have mana any more, you instead had a hierarchy of spells. What that means is that you had five slots and you could insert learned spells into these five slots. The higher the slot, the more powerful the spell would be. Though, you would have to upgrade your spell that number of times to enter it into the higher spot. This definitely was a really interesting, and intriguing system. I feel that it really worked and brought a lot of freedom to the game. I definitely felt like a magic hero with how it played out and it was even still a challenge.
I’ll admit that I am not a huge animal lover, well, unless they are reptiles or in a zoo.
But I actually liked how the dog mechanic worked with Fable 2. It definitely made finding treasure easier, and those sly silver keys that love to hide in weird places. Basically, the dog would bark, growl, or other dog things when something interesting was around and it helped make the game more fun and less stressful. You can also teach the dog tricks and expressions and those were fun to do.
Speaking of expressions, if you haven’t failed the “Fart” expression, well you need to!
It’s hilarious!
I really enjoyed Fable 2 in a whole. The demon doors were fun and unique, buying houses and ruining the economy is great fun, and messing with the locals is always a good time.
And one of the coolest parts is that you truly can effect
the world with certain choices that you make.
For instance a quest you do as a child has a great impact on the future of Bowerstone, or part of it anyways. I thought that was a really ingenious idea and it’s a lot of fun to try it out new ways.
The character I played was a male. I played him as a warrior mage that tried to live a healthy life style unless he was in desperate need of health. He started evil cause I thought it would be fun, but for some reason my character had a change of heart on one of his many moral binding missions and it turned him into the pure, and honorable savior of Albion. Unless of course there was someone that decided to shoot him when he was perusing the their house. He raised their rent, he did!
So, as you can hopefully see, Fable 2 is a lot of fun and a true enjoyment to play.
Even with some of the negative, it really is a game that you should own if you have an Xbox 360.
It’s replayable for sure, and it even has online aspects to where you can have a friend join up as a henchmen to help you “have fun” with the game. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that loves RPG’s or Sim like games. But don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself.
Also, definitely let the MDG community know what you think as well.
